OUR INITIATIVES
Fostering Understanding and Collaboration: Dialogue Programs for Journalists and Writers
At the Pak Media Foundation, we recognize the power of open communication and mutual understanding in strengthening both the media landscape and the broader community. Our dialogue programs serve as vital forums that bring together diverse voices – particularly journalists and writers – to engage in meaningful exchange.
More than just discussions, these dialogues are carefully structured to encourage participants from various backgrounds and perspectives to:
- Exchange information directly: Sharing knowledge and insights on critical issues and contemporary concerns.
- Share personal stories and experiences: Building empathy and connection through individual narratives, including sharing of challenges and concerns.
- Express perspectives honestly: Creating a safe space for authentic viewpoints to be heard.
- Clarify viewpoints: Fostering deeper comprehension of different stances for constructive engagement.
- Develop solutions to community concerns: Collaboratively working towards positive change through shared learning.
Our flagship program, “Yaraan-e-Sahafat-o-Adab” (Friends of Journalism and Literature), is specifically designed to facilitate this crucial dialogue among journalists and writers. Recognizing the powerful synergy between these two vital communities, this program provides a platform for them to connect, share insights, and learn from one another. The program includes regular monthly convenings in collaboration with key partners, including respective press clubs and media and other associations across the country.
One key partner in this regard is the Progressive Writers Association (a pre-independence association established in 1936), which convenes key media, literary and other stakeholders monthly in Lahore, Punjab to deliberate on different thematic areas, including discussions on shrinking civic space and challenges faced by journalists, importance of critical voices and historical and contemporary role of media, writers and civil society in promoting rule of law, fundamental freedoms and progressive thinking.
Through these dialogue initiatives, the Pak Media Foundation aims to cultivate a culture of listening, deepen understanding, and empower individuals to work together effectively, ultimately strengthening the media’s role as a force for positive societal development.
Empowering Women in Media: A Foundation for Resilience and Ethical Reporting: The Pak Media Foundation has initiated a crucial initiative to document the number of women journalists in Pakistani print and electronic media. Research and compilation of data is the first step towards establishing a strong national association for women journalists. This association aims to create a supportive network where women can address shared challenges, advocate for their rights, and foster professional growth within the media industry.
The establishment of this women journalist association is directly connected to the Foundation’s commitment to promoting gender-sensitive and trauma-informed journalism in Pakistan. By creating a robust support system, the association can help women journalists build resilience and navigate the often-challenging aspects of their work. Furthermore, a strong collective voice of women in the media can contribute to more sensitive and ethical reporting on traumatic events and on specific concerns of women and other marginalized groups, leading to a more inclusive and responsible media landscape that better serves both its professionals and the public.
Building Capacity with Sensitivity and Ethics: Recognizing that a vibrant and informed media landscape relies on a skilled and knowledgeable press corps, the Pak Media Foundation actively champions the professional growth of journalists through dedicated capacity-building initiatives. These programs are thoughtfully designed to equip media professionals with the evolving tools, ethical frameworks, and in-depth understanding necessary to navigate the complexities of modern journalism. By fostering continuous learning and skill enhancement, the Foundation empowers journalists to elevate their craft, contribute meaningfully to public discourse, and uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
Recognition of Excellence Program: Pak Media Foundation deeply values the dedication and significant contributions of journalists and media professionals to the landscape of information and public discourse in Pakistan. Through its ongoing Recognition of Excellence program, outstanding individuals and their impactful work is acknowledged and celebrated. From time to time, deserving journalists and media professionals are honoured with awards and medals, highlighting their commitment to ethical reporting, impactful storytelling, and their vital role in upholding the principles of a free and responsible press. This regular program underscores the Foundation’s commitment to fostering a culture of appreciation and inspiring continued excellence within the media fraternity. Most recently, Pak Media Foundation in collaboration with the Association of Photojournalists in Lahore, held an award distribution ceremony to appreciate the tireless work of photojournalists. During the ceremony, held on 19th March 2025 and attended by the Provincial Minister of Punjab for Information and Culture as the Chief Guest, 29 exemplary photojournalists were awarded gold medals and a cash stipend for their contributions.
OTHER PRO-BONO INITIATIVES
The Pak Media Foundation is dedicated to utilizing its capabilities to support important causes and communities through its pro bono initiatives. Some of our key efforts/activities included:
Ensuring Healthcare Access for the Media Community: Since 2016, the Pak Media Foundation has been committed to the well-being of journalists and their families in their residential area. Through our ongoing collaboration with Capital Diagnostic Centre, we provide essential medical facilitation services.
Promoting Literature & Empowering Authors Through Free Publication and Purchase of Books: In our commitment to empowering authors and fostering literary talent, we have provided free publishing of three books of notable media and literary persons. These included a poetry book authored by the respected Mr. Hafeez Tahir (a Pakistani TV producer, director, poet and writer. He was the director of popular children’s TV serial Ainak Wala Jin). In addition, the foundation routinely purchases books of various writers affiliated with the media as a way to provide direct financial assistance and support further dissemination of their work. This initiative underscores our belief in empowering authors and promoting diverse voices.
Responding to the Covid-19 Crisis: During the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pak Media Foundation extended a helping hand by making a donation to the Prime Minister’s Covid-19 Fund on May 13th, 2020. This contribution aimed to support national efforts in combating the health crisis. Furthermore, understanding the severe economic impact of the pandemic on the media industry, the Foundation offered financial assistance, distributing Rs. 200,000 to journalists facing hardship across various news organizations.
